Who is DEYA Brewing Company?

DEYA Brewing Company is an independent craft brewery based in Cheltenham that specialises in hop-forward beers. With a holistic approach to business, DEYA strives to make delicious beers in a sustainable and human-driven way, reduce its environmental impact, and drive meaningful change in the brewing industry.

The challenge

DEYA was in the early stages of its sustainability journey back in 2020 and recognised the importance of embedding sustainability into its operations. However, measuring carbon emissions across Scope 1, 2, and 3 proved challenging, particularly in Scope 3 categories like purchased goods and services (PG&S), including malt stock and other raw materials, which accounted for a significant portion of their emissions.

Without streamlined processes or the right tools, collecting and analysing emissions data was complex and time-intensive, placing strain on their small team. These challenges made it difficult for DEYA to gain clear insights into key emission hotspots, prioritise reduction efforts, and align their operations with long-term sustainability goals.

The biggest change Zevero has brought us is measuring our emissions. Before this, there’s only so much you can do before you need to measure and report on your impact. This allowed us to kickstart our sustainability journey.

The solution

Zevero provided DEYA with the tools and expertise to streamline emissions measurement and communicate progress effectively. By integrating with Brewman, DEYA’s brewery management software, Zevero automated data collection, reducing manual work and improving accuracy. Using its AI-driven emissions engine, Zevero measured carbon emissions across Scopes 1, 2, and 3, enabling its sustainability team to identify key hotspots and recommend measurable reduction targets.

Zevero worked with DEYA to create product carbon footprints for their beer cans, leading to the introduction of ‘Product standard’ carbon labels on their cans. These labels showcased DEYA’s commitment to transparency and inspire customers to make informed choices.

DEYA also embraced operational changes, such as publishing monthly emissions updates to engage employees, promoting cycling to work, transitioning to 100% renewable energy from hydro and wind power, and achieving Zero to Landfill status.

Zevero has allowed us to measure & report our emissions in an accurate and meaningful way. It’s meant we’ve been able to investigate emission hot spots and look to implement change and set targets.

The Results

Since partnering with Zevero, DEYA has achieved significant progress in its sustainability journey:

Key achievements:

  • Transparency through carbon labelling: Introduced carbon footprint data on beer cans, setting a new standard for openness in the brewing industry.
  • Emissions intensity reduction: Decreased emissions intensity from 0.82 kgCO2e/L in 2022 to 0.77 kgCO2e/L in 2023.
  • Overall emissions reduction: Achieved a 5.5% decrease in total emissions between 2022 and 2023.

The impact on DEYA’s business:

  • Building customer trust: Customers have shown increased interest in DEYA’s sustainability practices, requesting more information about its sustainability policies, which they are now able to provide.
  • Industry recognition: DEYA has been featured on BBC News and recognised as a leading voice in sustainability, with opportunities to deliver talks and engage in discussions with breweries and other companies.
Zevero has helped us stay at the forefront of sustainability in the brewing industry and has been key in starting conversations about measuring & reporting emissions to a high and accurate level.

Looking Ahead

Zevero is collaborating with DEYA on the next phase of their sustainability journey: setting clear targets and establishing a comprehensive decarbonisation model. This work will enable DEYA to pinpoint specific actions needed across their operations and supply chain to meet their targets. Additionally, this approach will empower DEYA to transparently report their progress and strategies to various stakeholders, ensuring accountability and alignment with their sustainability goals.
